Mateo’s First Day

Mateo had a new school. His tummy felt full of butterflies. “What if nobody talks to me?” he whispered to Mum at the gate.

His teacher, Ms Adeyemi, had a kind smile. “Mateo, can you help me with an important job?” she asked. “Our class fish, Bubbles, needs his breakfast.”

A boy called Kenji showed Mateo the fish food. “Just one tiny pinch,” said Kenji. Bubbles swam up and gobbled it. Mateo and Kenji laughed.

At home time, Mum asked, “How was it?” Mateo grinned. “I have a job, and I have a friend!”
