More about this collection
Comprehension grows from conversation. Before reading, look at the title and pictures and guess what will happen. During reading, stop once to ask a question. After reading, retell the story in three sentences. The written questions then become a check rather than the whole lesson.
Questions range from finding information in the text to explaining why a character acted as they did. That second kind, inference, is often the hardest, so model it out loud: “I think he was worried, because it says he kept checking the clock.” Choose texts slightly below your child’s reading level for comprehension work, so they can focus on meaning rather than decoding every word.
How to use these
- Predict, read, then retell in three sentences.
- Use a story map to plan a retelling.
- Ask “how do you know?” and point back to the text.

How can I help my child with reading comprehension?
Read together often, talk about the story, ask open questions and let your child retell it in their own words. Short, regular practice works better than long sessions.

Can children do them on a tablet?
Most can: press Play to answer on screen with instant marking and stars. Colouring and drawing pages can be done with a finger or stylus too.
