Sight Words Worksheets and Reading Practice

  • Ages 4–8
  • Free to print
  • Many play on screen

Some of the most common words in English, such as the, said, was and you, do not follow the usual phonics rules, so children learn to recognise them on sight. Knowing the first fifty or so frees up a beginning reader to concentrate on the words they need to sound out. Each sheet here focuses on one word: read it, colour it, trace it, write it and find it in a little grid.

More about this collection

Little and often works best: one or two new words a week, plus a quick review of the old ones. Stick finished sheets on the fridge, and point the words out when you read stories together. Recognising “the” in a real book is far more satisfying than on a worksheet.

The sheets come in three sets that follow a typical order, starting with the very common words like the, and and is. You can also make a page for any word in the Create tool, for example a tricky word from your child’s reading book this week.

How to use these

  1. Introduce one or two new words a week, not ten.
  2. Spot today’s word in a picture book at bedtime.
  3. Keep a little stack of mastered words and celebrate when it grows.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between sight words and high-frequency words?

High-frequency words are simply the most common words in print. Sight words are the ones children are taught to recognise instantly, often because they are hard to sound out. The two lists overlap a lot.

How many sight words should a 5-year-old know?

It depends on the school system, but many children know 20 to 50 by the end of their first school year. Steady progress matters more than a number.

Are these printables free?

Yes. Every sheet marked Free can be printed or played as often as you like, at home or in class. Premium activity books are marked.

How do I print a sheet?

Open a sheet and choose Print. It fits A4 and US Letter paper. Most sheets can also print with an answer key on a separate page.

Can children do them on a tablet?

Most can: press Play to answer on screen with instant marking and stars. Colouring and drawing pages can be done with a finger or stylus too.
