Phonics Worksheets: Letter Sounds, CVC Words and Rhymes

  • Ages 3–8
  • Free to print
  • Many play on screen

Phonics is the link between sounds and letters, and it is how most children learn to read. These worksheets follow the usual order: hearing the first sound in a word, matching sounds to letters, blending three-letter words like c-a-t and spotting words that rhyme. Pictures do a lot of the work, so even children who cannot read yet can join in.

More about this collection

Say sounds the way they really are: “mmm”, not “muh”, and “sss”, not “suh”. Clipped sounds make blending much easier. When your child reads a word, cover the picture first, let them sound it out, then reveal the picture as a reward and a check.

Phonics in other languages works differently, and our sheets follow each language’s own approach: syllables in Spanish, Italian and Indonesian, sounds and syllables in French and German, letters and their forms in Arabic, consonants and vowel signs in Hindi, and pinyin initials in Chinese. Switch the site language to see the right version.

How to use these

  1. Use pure, short sounds when you model letters.
  2. Blend aloud together: “c-a-t … cat!”
  3. Revisit rhyme pages often: rhyming is a strong early reading skill.
  4. Play the sheet on screen for instant feedback on tricky sounds.
