Early Maths Worksheets: Counting, Shapes and First Sums
- Ages 3–6
- Free to print
- Many play on screen
Early maths is mostly about understanding quantity: knowing that “five” means five things whichever way they are arranged, that 7 is more than 4, and that 3 and 2 make 5. Children build this understanding by counting real objects, spotting patterns and talking about “more”, “fewer” and “the same”. The sheets here follow that path, with pictures to count, groups to compare, ten frames to fill, simple patterns and the first addition and subtraction.

More about this collection
Always keep something to count nearby: buttons, raisins, toy animals. When a child is unsure, they can build the problem with objects, then check their answer on the page. That habit of “show me with things” is the best foundation for later maths.
These pages cover roughly what early-years curricula expect before formal schooling, from the English EYFS to US preschool and kindergarten standards. Use them alongside play, not instead of it: cooking, shopping, board games and building blocks are all early maths in disguise.
How to use these
- Count objects out loud together, touching each one once.
- Use the ten-frame sheets to see numbers as “5 and 2 more”.
- Ask “how did you know?”: explaining builds understanding.

Questions and answers
What maths should a 4-year-old know?
Many 4-year-olds can count to 10, recognise some numerals, compare small groups and name basic shapes. Children develop at different rates, and play is the main way they learn.
What is a ten frame?
A grid of two rows of five boxes. Filling it with counters helps children see numbers in relation to 5 and 10, which makes adding much easier later.
Are these printables free?
Yes. Every sheet marked Free can be printed or played as often as you like, at home or in class. Premium activity books are marked.
How do I print a sheet?
Open a sheet and choose Print. It fits A4 and US Letter paper. Most sheets can also print with an answer key on a separate page.
Can children do them on a tablet?
Most can: press Play to answer on screen with instant marking and stars. Colouring and drawing pages can be done with a finger or stylus too.
