Number Sense Worksheets: Ten Frames, Number Bonds and Place Value

  • Ages 4–9
  • Free to print
  • Many play on screen

Number sense is the feel for numbers that lets a child know, without counting, that 8 + 9 is a little less than 20, or that 52 is closer to 50 than to 60. It is what separates children who are comfortable with maths from those who rely on counting on their fingers for every sum. The sheets in this collection build it step by step: ten frames and number bonds for small numbers, number lines for adding and skip counting, place value for tens and ones, and fact families that show how adding and subtracting are linked.

More about this collection

Talk about strategies, not just answers. “I knew 5 + 5 is 10, so 5 + 6 is one more” is exactly the kind of thinking these pages encourage. When your child explains how they got there, they are building number sense.

Each sheet has several levels, so you can start where your child is comfortable and move up gradually. Children who rush ahead to written methods without number sense often struggle later, so it is time well spent even for confident calculators.

How to use these

  1. Practise number bonds to 10 until they are instant.
  2. Use a number line for adding and taking away before written methods.
  3. Ask for two different ways to solve the same sum.
