Ideas to try

  • Make a paper snowflake

Fold a square of paper, cut small shapes and unfold it. No two are the same, just like real snowflakes.

  • Ice experiment

Freeze water with a small toy inside and watch it melt. Does salt make it faster?

  • Winter journal

Record the weather every morning for a week and draw what you see.

  • Write a winter letter

Write to a grandparent or a friend far away about your winter days.

  • Read a snowy story

Ollie’s Snowman for little ones, The Night the Sky Danced for older readers.

Good to know

In the northern hemisphere winter runs from December to March; in Brazil, Australia and South Africa it falls in June to September, and in many tropical countries it simply means a cooler or drier season. Winter science is a great extra: what makes snow, why do animals hibernate, how do penguins stay warm?

Winter can be a long season for children who spend more time indoors. A folder of winter word games, colouring and drawing lessons gives you something new to offer on the darkest afternoons.

How to use these

  1. Pair colouring pages with a small winter science experiment.
  2. Use the journal page daily for a week.
  3. Print the winter activity book for the holidays.
