Diwali Activities and Printables for Kids

In 25 days

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists in India and around the world. Homes are cleaned and decorated with diyas (small clay lamps), candles and colourful rangoli patterns; families share sweets, wear new clothes and visit each other. The date follows the lunar calendar and falls in October or November.

Good to know

These printables include a Diwali scene to colour, word searches, scrambles and missing-letter games with Diwali words, a greeting card and party invitation template, and the Diwali Festival of Lights activity book. They work for families who celebrate and for classrooms learning about the festival.

When teaching about Diwali in class, focus on what families actually do: lighting lamps, making rangoli, sharing sweets and visiting each other. Children who celebrate often love to bring in photos or explain their traditions.

How to use these

  1. Use the word games to learn festival vocabulary before talking about it.
  2. Classrooms: invite children who celebrate to share, if they would like to.
  3. Print cards in colour for giving, or in black and white for colouring.
