Every Sunday, Ravi helps his grandfather, Dadaji, make roti for the whole family. Dadaji’s roti are perfectly round, like little full moons.
First they mix flour, a pinch of salt and warm water in a big bowl. Ravi squishes the dough with his fingers until it is soft and smooth. Then Dadaji shows him how to roll a small ball flat with the rolling pin. “Roll, turn, roll, turn,” Dadaji sings.
Ravi tries his best, but his first roti looks like a triangle. His second one looks like a map of an island. His third one has a big hole in the middle! Ravi frowns. “Mine are all wonky,” he says.
Dadaji laughs and puts Ravi’s roti on the hot pan anyway. They puff up and turn golden brown with little dark spots. “Taste,” says Dadaji. Ravi takes a bite. It is warm, soft and delicious.
At dinner, his little sister Asha picks the triangle roti first. “This one is the best shape,” she says. “It’s easy to scoop up the dal!” Everybody laughs, and Ravi feels very proud of his wonky roti.
