Grade 1 English · Unit 2: Writing Sentences

Joining Words: and, but, because

Use and, but, because and or to join ideas.

Joining words help you make longer sentences. And adds another idea: “I have a cat and a dog.” But shows something different: “I like rain, but I don't like wind.”

Because gives a reason: “I wore a coat because it was cold.” Or gives a choice: “Do you want milk or juice?” Joining words make your writing sound smooth.

Worked example

Join with the best word: “I stayed in. It was raining.”

  1. The second part says why I stayed in.
  2. A reason needs because.

Answer:I stayed in because it was raining.
