Grade 1 English · Unit 2: Writing Sentences

Telling, Asking, Bossy and Wow Sentences

Learn statements, questions, commands and exclamations.

There are four kinds of sentences. A statement tells you something: “The sky is blue.” A question asks something and ends with a question mark: “Where is my hat?”

A command tells someone what to do: “Sit down.” An exclamation shows a strong feeling and ends with an exclamation mark: “What a big cake!”

Read each sentence aloud and listen to your voice: questions go up at the end, and exclamations sound excited.
