Grade 1 English · Unit 2: Writing Sentences

Capital Letters and Full Stops

Start sentences with a capital letter and end them with a full stop.

A sentence is a group of words that makes sense on its own. It starts with a capital letter and usually ends with a full stop.

Some words always need a capital letter, wherever they are: the word I, people's names (Mia, Ben), the days of the week (Monday) and the names of places (London, Lagos).

Read your sentence back to check it makes sense.

Worked example

Fix this sentence: “my friend ben is six”

  1. Start with a capital: My.
  2. Ben is a name, so it needs a capital: Ben.
  3. End with a full stop.

Answer:My friend Ben is six.
