School in the United States: Pre-K to Grade 12 and free worksheets

Pre-K to Grade 12 with ages, how standards and state tests work, and free worksheets for every grade.

Most American children attend Kindergarten at about 5, then Grades 1 to 12. Schools are usually grouped as elementary school (Kindergarten to Grade 5), middle school (Grades 6–8) and high school (Grades 9–12), although some districts split the grades differently.

Education is run by the states and local school districts, so each state sets its own learning standards. Many states use standards based on the Common Core for math and English language arts.

Under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), states test reading and math every year in Grades 3–8 and once in high school, and science once in each grade span.

Tips for this school system

  • In Kindergarten and Grade 1, short daily practice with letters, sounds and numbers matters more than long homework.
  • Math facts get faster with a little practice every day; a fresh sheet each day keeps it from turning into memorizing one page.
  • Summer is a good time for one short sheet a day so the new school year starts strong.
