School in India: LKG to Class 12, NEP stages and free worksheets

From LKG to Class 12, the four NEP stages, the board exams, and free worksheets for every class.

Most children in India go through pre-primary (often called LKG and UKG, or Nursery, LKG and UKG), then Class 1 to Class 12. Classes 10 and 12 end with board examinations.

The National Education Policy 2020 replaces the old 10+2 description with a 5+3+3+4 design: a Foundational stage of five years (ages 3–8: three years of pre-primary plus Classes 1–2), a Preparatory stage (Classes 3–5, ages 8–11), a Middle stage (Classes 6–8, ages 11–14) and a Secondary stage (Classes 9–12, ages 14–18).

Schools are affiliated to a board, such as CBSE, CISCE or a state board, which sets the syllabus and the board exams. NEP also proposes school assessments in Classes 3, 5 and 8 to help improve teaching.

Curriculum

NCERT and the boards

Many boards use NCERT textbooks and frameworks. Our sheets are organised by class and age and cover core skills such as number work, tables, phonics, reading and handwriting.

Tips for this school system

  • In the Foundational stage (up to Class 2), play-based practice works best: counting, tracing, colouring and reading aloud for ten minutes a day.
  • Tables and mental maths build up over Classes 2–5. A fresh times-table sheet every day keeps practice from turning into memorising one page.
  • Read together in English and in your home language, such as Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or Marathi; talking about a story builds vocabulary in both.

Questions parents ask

What age is Class 1 in India?

Under NEP 2020, the Foundational stage covers ages 3 to 8, with three years of pre-primary before Class 1, so children usually start Class 1 at about 6.

What is the 5+3+3+4 system?

It is the school structure in the National Education Policy 2020: Foundational (5 years, ages 3–8), Preparatory (Classes 3–5), Middle (Classes 6–8) and Secondary (Classes 9–12).

Are there two board exams for Class 10?

From 2026, CBSE holds the Class 10 board exams twice a year, with the second sitting as an optional chance to improve. Other boards set their own rules.

Are the worksheets free?

Yes. Every class page has free sheets you can print, play on screen or write on with a finger or stylus. Some actions need a free account, and a few items marked Premium are part of a paid plan. There are no ads and no trackers.
