Grade 4 Maths · Unit 1: Large numbers

Rounding large numbers

Round to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 or 10 000.

To round, find the place you are rounding to. Then look at the digit just to its right. If that digit is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, round down. All the digits after the rounding place become zeros.

Rounding 46 382 to the nearest 1000: the thousands digit is 6 and the digit to its right is 3, so round down to 46 000. To the nearest 10 000, look at the 6: round up to 50 000.

Worked example

Round 27 650 to the nearest 1000.

  1. The thousands digit is 7. The next digit is 6.
  2. 6 is 5 or more, so round up to 28 000.
