Grade 4 Maths · Unit 1: Large numbers

Reading large numbers

Read numbers up to a million and find the value of each digit.

Large numbers are split into groups of three digits to make them easy to read. In 472 815, the first group is thousands: four hundred seventy-two thousand. The second group is eight hundred fifteen.

Each place is worth ten times the place to its right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. So in 472 815 the 7 is in the ten thousands place and is worth 70 000.

Worked example

What is the value of the digit 6 in 361 048?

  1. Count the places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands.
