Grade 4 Maths · Unit 1: Large numbers

Comparing large numbers

Compare and order numbers up to a million.

First count the digits. A number with more digits is bigger: 100 000 is greater than 99 999. If two numbers have the same number of digits, compare them place by place from the left.

The first place where the digits differ decides. 538 241 and 538 412 match until the hundreds place, where 2 is less than 4. So 538 241 < 538 412. To put several numbers in order, compare them in pairs.
