The 3, 4 and 8 times tables

Learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables and how they link.

The 3 times table counts in 3s: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. The 4 times table counts in 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20. The 8 times table counts in 8s: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40.

These tables are linked by doubling. Every 4 times fact is double the 2 times fact: 2 × 7 = 14, so 4 × 7 = 28. Every 8 times fact is double the 4 times fact: 4 × 7 = 28, so 8 × 7 = 56. If you forget a fact, build it from one you know.

Worked example

8 × 6 =

  1. Start with 2 × 6 = 12.
  2. Double it to get 4 × 6 = 24, then double again: 8 × 6 = 48.
