Division facts

Use times tables to divide.

Division means sharing into equal groups or finding how many groups. 24 ÷ 6 asks: how many 6s are in 24? Or: if 24 is shared between 6, how many each?

Every division fact has a matching multiplication fact. If you know 6 × 4 = 24, you also know 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6. These four facts are a fact family. So to divide, think of the times table that fits.

Worked example

56 ÷ 7 =

  1. Ask: 7 times what makes 56?
  2. 7 × 8 = 56.
