Parts of a plant

Name the roots, stem, leaves and flowers of a plant and what each part does.

Most plants have the same main parts, and each part has a job. The roots grow under the ground. They hold the plant in place and take in water. The stem holds the plant up and carries water from the roots to the leaves.

The leaves are often green and flat. They use sunlight to make food for the plant. Many plants also have flowers. Flowers make seeds, and seeds can grow into new plants. Some plants grow fruit around their seeds, like apples and tomatoes.

Worked example
