Grade 1 Science · Unit 2: Young animals, senses and materials

Parents and their young

Compare young animals with their parents and see how parents care for them.

Young animals look like their parents, but not exactly. A puppy has fur and four legs like its mother, but it is smaller and may have a different colour. Brothers and sisters can look different from each other too.

Many parents look after their young. Birds feed their chicks in the nest. A mother cat carries her kittens to keep them safe. Penguin fathers keep their egg warm on their feet. Some young animals change a lot as they grow: a tadpole looks nothing like a frog at first.

Worked example

A baby swan is grey and fluffy, but its parents are white. Is it still a swan?

  1. Young animals can look different from their parents.
  2. A baby swan, called a cygnet, grows white feathers later.

Answer:So yes, it is still a swan.
