Hops on a number line

Use hops forward and back on a number line to add and subtract.

A number line shows numbers in order. To add, start at the first number and hop forward. To take away, hop back.

Each hop is one step. For 7 + 4, start at 7 and make 4 hops forward to land on 11. For 15 − 6, start at 15 and make 6 hops back to land on 9.

Count the hops, not the numbers you start on. Your finger moves along with each hop, so you can see where you land.

Worked example

Start at 9 and hop forward 5. Where do you land?

  1. Count each hop: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.
  2. The fifth hop lands on 14.

Answer:14
