Longer and shorter

Compare and order the lengths of objects.

To compare lengths, line the objects up at one end. The one that sticks out further is longer. The one that stops first is shorter.

We can also measure in centimeters (cm) and compare the numbers. A 15 cm ribbon is longer than a 9 cm ribbon because 15 is more than 9.

To put three things in order, find the shortest first, then the next, then the longest.

Worked example

A pencil is 14 cm, a crayon is 8 cm and a ruler is 30 cm. Which is the shortest?

  1. Compare the numbers: 8, 14 and 30.
