Sides and corners

Count the sides and corners of flat shapes.

Shapes are named by how many sides they have. A triangle has 3, a square and a rectangle have 4, a pentagon has 5 and a hexagon has 6.

A flat shape with straight sides has the same number of corners as sides. A hexagon has 6 sides and 6 corners.

Some shapes have curved sides. A circle has one curved side and no corners at all, so it is not like the others. Shapes with straight sides and many corners can look a bit like circles, like an octagon with 8 sides.
