Grade 1 Maths · Unit 5: Shapes and halves

Halves and quarters

Split shapes and amounts into 2 or 4 equal parts.

When we cut something into 2 equal parts, each part is a half. When we cut it into 4 equal parts, each part is a quarter. The parts must be the same size.

We can find half of a number too. Half of 8 is 4, because 4 and 4 make 8. A quarter is half of a half.

Two quarters make one half, and four quarters make a whole. To find a quarter of 8, halve it to get 4, then halve again to get 2.
