Flat shapes

Name circles, triangles, squares, rectangles and more.

Flat shapes are also called 2D shapes. A circle is round with no corners. A triangle has 3 straight sides. A square has 4 equal sides, and a rectangle has 4 sides with two long and two short.

A shape is still the same shape if you turn it or make it bigger. A triangle upside down is still a triangle.

Worked example

A shape has 4 straight sides. Two sides are long and two are short. What is it?

  1. 4 sides means a square or a rectangle.
  2. The sides are not all equal, so it is not a square.
