Grade 1 English · Unit 1: Reading Stories, Facts and Poems

Characters, Settings and Events

Learn to find who a story is about, where it happens and what happens.

Every story has characters, a setting and events. Characters are the people or animals in the story. The setting is where and when it happens. Events are the things that happen, one after another.

When you read, stop and ask: Who is this about? Where are they? What happened first, next and last? The answers are in the words and the pictures.

Good readers also notice how a character feels. Look for clues such as smiling, crying or shouting.

Worked example

  1. Who? The story is about Sam the dog.
