Grade 1 English · Unit 1: Reading Stories, Facts and Poems

Finding Facts

Learn to find facts in information texts and say what they are mostly about.

Some books tell stories. Others give us facts. A fact is something true that we can check, like “Bees have six legs.” Books full of facts are called information texts.

Information texts often have a title, headings and pictures with labels. The title tells you the main topic: what the text is mostly about. To answer a question, look for the key word from the question in the text.

Facts can be about animals, places, people or how things work.

Worked example

Read: “Frogs live near ponds. They eat flies.” What do frogs eat?

  1. Find the key word: eat.
  2. Read the sentence with eat in it: “They eat flies.”

Answer:Frogs eat flies.
