Word Searches for Kids: Free Printable Puzzles

  • Ages 6–18
  • Free to print
  • Many play on screen

Word searches look simple, but they do real work: children have to hold a word in their head, spell it letter by letter and scan systematically. Our puzzles come in three levels. The easiest grid hides a few short words going across and down, the middle level adds diagonals, and the hardest has longer words in all eight directions, including backwards.

More about this collection

Themes range from animals and food to space, the body and every season and festival through the year. If you want your own words, for example this week’s spelling list, the Create tool makes a new word search in seconds.

Word searches are also good for language learners and for reviewing topic vocabulary in science or geography. Pick a theme, read the words together first and talk about any the child does not know. Seasonal word searches for festivals and holidays are on each seasonal page, ready for the time of year.

How to use these

  1. Read the word list aloud before starting.
  2. Look for the first letter, then check the letters around it.
  3. Make a word search from this week’s spelling words in the Create tool.
