Crosswords for Kids: Picture Crosswords to Print or Play
- Ages 6–12
- Ready to print
- Many play on screen
A crossword is a wonderful spelling exercise, but word clues can be too hard for young readers. Our crosswords use pictures as clues: a picture of a cat means “cat” goes in the grid. That makes them perfect for children from about six who are still building their spelling. Themes include animals, food, toys, clothes, transport and more, in three levels.

More about this collection
The crossing letters are the secret helper. If a child knows one word, the letters it shares with the next one give a head start. Encourage them to fill in the words they are sure of first, then use the crossing letters for the tricky ones.
Because each language has its own picture words, the crosswords are real puzzles in every language, not translations. That makes them useful for language learners too: switch the site language to practise vocabulary in Spanish, French or any other language we offer. Start with the easiest level, where the first letters are given.
How to use these
- Fill in the easiest words first, then use the crossing letters.
- Say each picture word out loud and count its sounds.
- Use the easiest level, which shows the first letters, for new readers.

Questions and answers
At what age can children do crosswords?
Picture crosswords suit most children from around age 6. Word-clue crosswords are usually better from age 9 or 10.
Are the crosswords available in my language?
Yes. The picture words come from our picture dictionary, so each language gets real crosswords in that language.
Are these printables free?
You can try them with a free account: it includes a few prints and plays, with no card needed. A Family or Teacher plan gives you unlimited printing and playing, plus every premium item.
How do I print a sheet?
Open a sheet and choose Print. It fits A4 and US Letter paper. Most sheets can also print with an answer key on a separate page.
Can children do them on a tablet?
Most can: press Play to answer on screen with instant marking and stars. Colouring and drawing pages can be done with a finger or stylus too.
