To share $63 in the ratio 5 : 4, first add the parts: 5 + 4 = 9 parts altogether. Then find one part: 63 ÷ 9 = 7. Then multiply: the first share is 5 × 7 = 35 and the second is 4 × 7 = 28.
Check that the shares add back to the total: 35 + 28 = 63. A bar model shows this clearly: draw 9 equal boxes, 5 for one person and 4 for the other, and write 7 in each box.
Worked example
Share 50 in the ratio 2 : 3. What is the larger share?
- 2 + 3 = 5 parts, so one part is 50 ÷ 5 = 10.
- The larger share is 3 parts: 3 × 10 = 30.
