Fractions, decimals and percentages are three ways to write the same amount. 1/2 = 0.5 = 50% and 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%.
To change a decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100: 0.07 = 7%. To change a fraction to a percentage, make the denominator 100 if you can: 13/25 = 52/100 = 52%. Or divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal first: 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%.
Worked example
Write 9/20 as a percentage.
- Multiply top and bottom by 5 to make the denominator 100.
- 9/20 = 45/100.
