Grade 4 Maths · Unit 2: Multiplication

Multiplying by a one-digit number

Multiply numbers with up to four digits by a one-digit number.

To multiply 2 437 × 6, multiply each digit by 6, starting with the ones. Write the ones digit of each answer and carry the tens to the next column, adding them after you multiply.

You can also use partitioning: split 2 437 into 2000 + 400 + 30 + 7, multiply each part by 6 and add: 12 000 + 2 400 + 180 + 42 = 14 622. The short column method is the quickest once you are confident.

Worked example

Work out 2 437 × 6

  1. Ones 7 × 6 = 42, write 2 carry 4. Tens 3 × 6 = 18, + 4 = 22, write 2 carry 2.
  2. Hundreds 4 × 6 = 24, + 2 = 26, write 6 carry 2. Thousands 2 × 6 = 12, + 2 = 14.
