Grade 4 Maths · Unit 5: Decimals

Tenths and hundredths

Write tenths and hundredths as decimals and fractions.

A decimal point separates whole numbers from parts of a whole. The first place after the point is tenths and the second is hundredths. 0.7 means 7 tenths, or 7/10. 0.35 means 35 hundredths, or 35/100.

Tenths and hundredths are linked: 3/10 is the same as 30/100, so 0.3 = 0.30. Money uses hundredths: $4.25 is 4 dollars and 25 hundredths of a dollar, which is 25 cents.

On a number line from 0 to 1, the tenths are the big steps and the hundredths are the ten small steps inside each one.
