Amounts of money use two decimal places for cents: $3.45 is 3 dollars and 45 cents. To add amounts, line up the decimal points, just like with other decimals.
To find change, subtract the price from the money you pay. Counting up also works: from $3.45, add 5¢ to make $3.50, then 50¢ to make $4, then $1 to make $5. The change from $5 is $1.55.
Worked example
A book costs $6.80. You pay with a $10 bill. How much change do you get?
- Count up from $6.80: 20¢ makes $7.00.
- Then $3 makes $10. Change is $3 + $0.20.
