Linking Ideas in Order

Use time and linking words to connect your sentences.

Linking words join your ideas together so your writing flows. Time words such as first, next, then, after that and finally show the order of events.

Other linking words show different jobs. However shows a contrast: “We wanted to play. However, it rained.” Also adds an idea. So shows a result.

When you plan a recount, write each event in order and choose a linking word to start each new part.

Worked example

Choose a linking word: “First, mix the flour and sugar. ___, add the eggs.”

  1. This is the step after the first one.
