Grade 2 English · Unit 2: Grammar Builders

Sentence Types and Joining Words

Write statements, questions, commands and exclamations, and join ideas.

Remember the four sentence types: statements tell, questions ask, commands instruct and exclamations show strong feeling.

You can make sentences longer with joining words. Use and to add, but to contrast, so to show a result and because to give a reason: “It was late, so we went home.”

Mixing short and long sentences makes your writing more interesting to read.

Every sentence still needs a capital letter at the start and the right punctuation mark at the end.

Worked example

Join with a joining word: “We were hungry. We made sandwiches.”

  1. The second part happens as a result of the first.
  2. A result needs so.

Answer:We were hungry, so we made sandwiches.
