A comparative essay explores similarities and differences between texts. The strongest essays integrate the comparison in every paragraph rather than writing about one text and then the other.
Each paragraph can focus on one aspect, such as how both texts present power, using connectives like similarly, whereas, in contrast and likewise.
Compare methods as well as ideas: Shelley uses a ruined statue, while another writer may use speech or character. Conclude by evaluating which text presents the idea more powerfully, and why.
Worked example
Write a comparative sentence: Shelley shows power crumbling; Antony uses words to win power.
- Use a comparative connective such as whereas.
- Join the two ideas in one sentence.
Answer:Whereas Shelley shows power crumbling into dust, Antony shows power being won through language.
