Grade 1 Maths · Unit 2: Adding and taking away within 20

Adding within 10

Put two small groups together and find how many in all.

Adding means putting groups together to find how many there are in all. We write it with the plus sign, +. The answer comes after the equals sign, =.

You can count on from the bigger number. For 2 + 6, start at 6 and count on two more: 7, 8. You can add numbers in any order and get the same answer.

Some facts are worth knowing by heart, like 5 + 5 = 10 and 4 + 4 = 8. Adding 0 changes nothing: 7 + 0 = 7.

Worked example

3 + 5 =

  1. Start at the bigger number, 5.
  2. Count on 3 more: 6, 7, 8.
