Pre-Writing Practice Sheets for Preschoolers
- Ages 3–5
- Free to print
- Many play on screen
Before letters come lines: straight down, across, round and round, zigzags and waves. These are the building blocks of every letter, and practising them makes the first real writing much less frustrating. The pages here start with paths and patterns to trace, then move on to letters and numbers with arrows that show where to begin.
Our picks

More about this collection
Sit beside your child and watch how they hold the pencil. A relaxed grip near the tip, with the paper held by the other hand, is what you are aiming for. Do not worry about perfect shapes: the goal at this stage is control and confidence, and both grow with regular, short practice.
If your child is left-handed, place the paper slightly to the left and tilt it clockwise, so they can see what they are writing. Left-handers often pull the pencil rather than push it, which is perfectly fine; a softer pencil or crayon helps the line flow without smudging.
How to use these
- Show the movement in the air first, then on paper.
- Always start at the arrow: it builds the habit of starting letters correctly.
- Practise on a vertical surface (an easel or taped to a wall) for stronger shoulders.

Questions and answers
What is pre-writing?
Pre-writing means the lines and shapes children practise before writing letters: vertical and horizontal lines, circles, crosses, diagonals and zigzags.
When should children start writing letters?
Many children are ready around age 4 or 5, once they can copy a circle, a cross and a square. Some are ready earlier, some later, and that is fine.
Are these printables free?
Yes. Every sheet marked Free can be printed or played as often as you like, at home or in class. Premium activity books are marked.
How do I print a sheet?
Open a sheet and choose Print. It fits A4 and US Letter paper. Most sheets can also print with an answer key on a separate page.
Can children do them on a tablet?
Most can: press Play to answer on screen with instant marking and stars. Colouring and drawing pages can be done with a finger or stylus too.
