Averages from frequency tables

Find the mean, median and mode from a frequency table.

A frequency table shows each value and how many times it occurs. To find the mean, multiply each value by its frequency, add these products and divide by the total frequency.

The mode is the value with the highest frequency. For the median, find the position (n + 1)/2 and count down the frequencies until you reach it. With 33 matches, the median is the 17th value.

Worked example

Goals 0, 1, 2 have frequencies 5, 8, 7. Find the mean.

  1. Products: 0 × 5 + 1 × 8 + 2 × 7 = 22.
  2. Total frequency 20: 22 ÷ 20 = 1.1.
