Grade 6 Maths · Unit 7: Statistics

Mean, median and mode

Find the three averages of a set of data.

An average is one number that represents a set of data. The mean is the total divided by how many values there are. The median is the middle value when the data is in order. The mode is the value that appears most often.

For 3, 7, 7, 8, 10: the mean is 35 ÷ 5 = 7, the median is 7 and the mode is 7. If there is an even number of values, the median is halfway between the two middle values.

Worked example

Find the mean of 15, 12, 12, 6, 5

  1. Add the values: 15 + 12 + 12 + 6 + 5 = 50.
  2. Divide by how many values: 50 ÷ 5 = 10.
