Dividing larger numbers

Divide four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers.

Long division works for any size of number. For 9 768 ÷ 24, divide the first part that is big enough: 97 ÷ 24 = 4, because 4 × 24 = 96. Subtract to get 1 and bring down the 6: 16.

24 does not go into 16, so write 0 in the answer and bring down the 8: 168. 168 ÷ 24 = 7. The answer is 407. Writing the multiples of 24 first saves time: 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168.

Worked example

Work out 5 412 ÷ 22

  1. 54 ÷ 22 = 2 r 10, bring down 1: 101 ÷ 22 = 4 r 13.
  2. Bring down 2: 132 ÷ 22 = 6.
