Long division

Divide by a two-digit number using long division.

Long division is like short division, but you write the subtraction steps. For 864 ÷ 24, ask how many 24s are in 86: 3, because 3 × 24 = 72. Subtract to get 14, then bring down the 4 to make 144.

Now ask how many 24s are in 144: 6, because 6 × 24 = 144. Nothing is left, so 864 ÷ 24 = 36. Writing a list of multiples of the divisor first (24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144) makes each step quick.

Worked example

Work out 672 ÷ 16

  1. 67 ÷ 16 = 4, because 4 × 16 = 64. 67 − 64 = 3, bring down 2 to make 32.
  2. 32 ÷ 16 = 2.
