Grade 4 Maths · Unit 6: Measurement

Customary units

Convert feet, inches, yards, pounds, ounces, liters and milliliters.

The US also uses customary units. 1 foot = 12 inches, 1 yard = 3 feet and 1 pound = 16 ounces. Liquids can be measured in liters and milliliters: 1 liter = 1000 milliliters.

Converting works the same as with metric units. Multiply to change into a smaller unit and divide to change into a bigger one. 5 feet = 5 × 12 = 60 inches. A table of conversions helps you remember.

When a measurement is mixed, like 3 feet 4 inches, change the feet to inches and then add: 36 + 4 = 40 inches.
