Grade 4 Maths · Unit 3: Division

Short division

Divide numbers with up to four digits by a one-digit number.

Short division works from the left. For 3 864 ÷ 4, ask how many 4s go into 3: none, so carry the 3 to make 38. 38 ÷ 4 = 9 remainder 2. Carry the 2 to make 26. 26 ÷ 4 = 6 remainder 2. Carry it to make 24. 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

So 3 864 ÷ 4 = 966. Write each answer digit above its column. Check by multiplying: 966 × 4 = 3 864.

Worked example

Work out 2 556 ÷ 6

  1. 25 ÷ 6 = 4 remainder 1. Carry 1 to make 15.
  2. 15 ÷ 6 = 2 remainder 3. Carry 3 to make 36. 36 ÷ 6 = 6.
