Persuasive Writing: Points and Reasons

Plan persuasive writing with a clear opinion, reasons and linking words.

Persuasive writing tries to convince the reader to agree with you or do something. Start with a clear statement of what you want: “Our school should start a recycling club.”

Give at least three reasons, each in its own paragraph, and support them with facts or examples. Use linking words to order your reasons (firstly, furthermore, finally) and to deal with the other side (however, on the other hand).

End by repeating your main point and telling the reader what to do.

Worked example

  1. Furthermore and Firstly add points.
  2. However introduces a contrasting idea.
