Bar graphs with a scale

Read bar graphs where each step stands for 2, 5 or 10.

On some bar graphs, each line on the scale is worth more than 1. If the scale goes 0, 5, 10, 15, each step is worth 5. A bar half way between 10 and 15 shows 12 or 13, so look carefully.

Read the scale before you read any bar. Then you can answer questions such as how many in total, which is the most popular and how many more chose one thing than another.

Worked example

The scale goes up in 5s. The apples bar reaches 35 and the pears bar reaches 20. How many more chose apples?

  1. Read both bars: 35 and 20.
  2. Subtract: 35 − 20 = 15.

Answer:15 more
