Grade 3 Maths · Unit 2: Place value and rounding

Rounding to the nearest 10

Round a number to the nearest ten.

Rounding gives a simpler number that is close to the real one. To round to the nearest 10, find the two tens the number sits between. 67 is between 60 and 70.

Look at the ones digit. If it is 5 or more, round up to the next ten. If it is 4 or less, round down. 67 rounds up to 70 because 7 is more than 5. 243 rounds down to 240 because 3 is less than 5.

Worked example

Round 385 to the nearest 10.

  1. 385 is between 380 and 390.
  2. The ones digit is 5, so round up.
