Grade 3 Maths · Unit 3: Fractions

Comparing fractions with the same denominator

Compare fractions that have the same bottom number.

When two fractions have the same denominator, the parts are the same size. So the fraction with more parts is bigger. 5/8 is bigger than 3/8 because 5 eighths is more than 3 eighths.

You only need to compare the numerators. But both fractions must be parts of the same-sized whole, like two equal pizzas. We use > and < just as with whole numbers: 5/8 > 3/8.

Worked example

Which is greater: 4/10 or 7/10?

  1. The denominators are both 10, so the parts are the same size.
  2. 7 parts is more than 4 parts.

Answer:7/10
